Oregon Employer Council honored members, volunteers and staff in five categories during its 2010 annual state conference for business, April 12 & 13 at the Nines Hotel in Portland.  The awards were bestowed for above-and-beyond contributions to the 33 year-old nonprofit organization.

The Clackamas County Employer Council (CCEC), based in the Oregon City, won Local Council of the Year.  Judges selected Clackamas from three nominations because it accomplished “an amazing amount of work,” according to one judge.  Jackson County OEC and the chapter from Josephine County were also nominated.  All three councils were recognized for the dedication and cohesiveness of the members, and for the events they produced.  The three areas served by these councils benefit from the community service work, scholarships, charitable giving and education provided by these councils.  CCEC chair is Mattison Schilling of Blount International, manufacturer of chain saw parts.  The coordinator is Oregon City's Mary Nelson.

Patricia Barclay from Roseburg, the OEC coordinator from Douglas County Employer Council (DCEC), was honored as coordinator of the year.  This category was very competitive and the judges deliberated a long time before singling out Patricia for her excellent work with DCEC.  In the nomination submission, DCEC referred to Patricia as their backbone.  She was praised for her organizational skills, accuracy, passion and enthusiasm for the employer network in the Roseburg area. Mary Nelson from Oregon City and Julie Matthews from Klamath Falls were also nominated for local coordinator of the year.

The distinguished service award went to Grant Axtell of the Employment Department’s training team.  Grant, along with the entire training team, were recognized for the many training sessions provided to OEC local councils throughout Oregon.  Available course offerings are as important to business as they are to OED staff, so it is greatly appreciated when the training is customized and delivered to the business community.  Receiving excellent training in critical areas helped elevate the Employment Department's reputation in the eyes of OEC members, who regard the Department as an expert in all things HR.

Mattison Schilling accepted a second award when the Exceptional Accomplishment Award was announced.  Mattison, and the Clackamas County OEC, were singled out for this award for several reasons, including chairing the 2010 conference committee.  Judges were impressed with Mattison’s leadership style and ability.  One judge called her a “rising star” within OEC.

The President’s Award is not an annual award, but bestowed upon a person or organization that has made a significant contribution to the success of OEC, its mission and goals.  In this year’s case, the recipient was also an integral part of OEC’s day-to-day operation.  Craig Spivey and the OED Communications section were honored for their on-going assistance with OEC business.   Always with a smile, Craig and his co-workers pitch in to assist OEC with promotional assistance, Web postings, press relations, materials, graphic design, event coverage, library maintenance and more.

When Craig’s name was announced, he had to take his own picture as he received the award, to the delight of the dinner crowd.

OEC congratulates all of the nominees and offers gratitude to the part they play in the success of the statewide organization.
